Keeping a Tilde Account Active

Shared machines reward regular logins. The two common ways a tilde presence decays are idle accounts (some hosts prune them) and dead sessions (IRC dropping off when the server reboots). A light routine keeps both from happening.

Daily

  • Tend your plants: botany (town botany) and astrobotany both punish neglect: one watering lasts 24 hours, and about 5 dry days kills the plant. Visitors' waterings count on town, so watering a neighbour's plant is the social move
  • If you keep a diary with town feels, write the day's entry; each day is ~/.ttbp/entries/YYYYMMDD.txt
  • If you are on cosmic.voyage, check latest for new relay traffic before writing your next ship log

A note on astrobotany: your plant is tied to a TLS client certificate. Losing the certificate orphans the plant permanently, so back it up.

Weekly

Every host:

  • Re-create byobu/tmux sessions; they die on server reboot: ssh -t host byobu, then start irssi or weechat inside
  • Check local mail and guestbook files
  • Contribute something to shared spaces: a file in tilde.town's /town/square, a bulletin link, a club page

Per host:

  • Keep publishing: a gemlog post (gemlog/YYYY-MM-DD-slug.gmi with a dated link at the top of the index, the convention aggregators subscribe to), a bashblog post (bb post), a phlog entry on sdf
  • Watch for neighbour activity: town frnds, roster on cosmic, bboard on sdf
  • Read the motd and host news; rules and available services change
