cosmic.voyage

cosmic.voyage: a tildeverse pubnix built around one shared project, a collaborative science-fiction universe. Members write stories as the crews of ships, colonies, and outposts. The fiction explains the system's plain-text shape: in the story, the Quantum Entanglement Communicator (QEC) is the only link between the scattered peoples of the stars, and it carries only simple messages.

Publishing Is the Story

  • ship: claims a ship, colony, or outpost and creates ~/ships/<name>/. Only you can write your ship's story
  • ~/ships/<name>/*.txt: each text file is one message to the relay, wrapped at 80 columns; the relay does not rewrap
  • log: links a finished message into the QEC, publishing it on the web, gopher, and gemini at once. Messages stay editable in place; there is no need to run log again after edits
  • ~/ships/<name>/ doubles as a web space: files dropped there are served at cosmic.voyage/<name>/. (~/public_html exists but ~user dirs are not actually served)

Tools

  • man cosmic.voyage: the introduction manual
  • menu: interactive menu covering ships, messages, and system features
  • roster: every ship and the author behind it
  • latest: recent transmissions on the relay
  • wiki, faq: system documentation, opened in lynx
  • chat, bbj, botany: the usual tildeverse toys; #cosmic on tilde.chat is the social room
  • alpine, mutt: mail clients; cosmic mail only reaches other users and pubnixes

Etiquette

Reacting to what you overhear on the relay is free. Making another author's characters act or changing their storyline needs their permission first: find the author on roster and mail them or ask in #cosmic.
