tilde:club

tilde.club

tilde.club: the server that started the modern tilde wave in October 2014, when Paul Ford offered shell accounts to anyone who asked. Runs Fedora; a plain, standard unix box.

ssh you@tilde.club

See Pubnix History for the founding story and The Tildeverse for the network that followed it.

Publishing

  • ~/public_html/: served at tilde.club/~you/
  • ~/public_gopher/: gopherhole; a blog subdirectory can serve bashblog posts over gopher
  • ~/public_gemini/: minimal gemini serving

Tools

  • bb (bashblog): a single-script blog engine. bb post to write, bb rebuild to regenerate, blog/.config for settings. Produces static HTML plus feed.rss, and .backup.tar.gz/.yesterday.tar.gz revert files
  • alpine, mutt, mail: mail clients; the mailbox is a maildir at ~/.mail/, with server-side sieve filters and .forward support
  • weechat, irssi: IRC clients
  • byobu: persistent sessions so IRC survives logout
  • chfn, finger: finger fields and .plan/.project/.pronouns
  • Editors: micro, nano, vim, emacs
  • TOTP two-factor login is supported via ~/.google_authenticator

Notes

  • Three shells come configured by default on a typical account: bash, zsh, and mksh
  • Fedora's dnf package cache can land in ~/.cache and grow large
  • ~/.keychain/ provides ssh-agent persistence
