Tilde Apps

Quick reference for the programs used across the tilde accounts: what each is and the commands or keys that matter. For host-specific launchers (town feels, bb post, log), see Commands. Adapted from the tilde repo wiki.

weechat

Extensible terminal IRC client, available on most tildes.

  • Launch: weechat; on town, town chat opens it already connected
  • Alt+Left/Alt+Right or F5/F6: switch buffers
  • /join #channel, /query user, /msg user text, /nick newname
  • /connect town, /server list, /disconnect
  • /quit exits and ends the connection; run inside byobu to stay connected
  • /help <command> for anything else

Gotcha: never create ~/.weechat/ by hand on town or club. If it exists, weechat uses it as the config home and ignores ~/.config/weechat/ entirely.

irssi

The other common IRC client.

  • Launch: irssi (inside byobu to stay connected)
  • Ctrl+X: switch networks; Alt+1… or /win N: switch windows
  • /connect irc.tilde.chat, /join #channel, /msg user
  • /save: write current channels/networks to ~/.irssi/config
  • /quit: exit; /help for the manual

See irssi for the full page.

alpine

Terminal mail client, successor to pine; a good fit for hosts that give you a real maildir (like tilde.club).

  • Launch: alpine
  • Arrows navigate menus; i goes to the message index
  • r reply, c compose, d delete, s save to a folder, e export to a file
  • m main menu, l folder list, ? help, q quit
  • Config: ~/.pinerc; stored password in ~/.alpine.passfile

mutt

Terminal mail client; configure .muttrc against an IMAP host (e.g., mail.envs.net on envs) or use it for the local spool.

  • Launch: mutt
  • Enter reads a message, i returns to the index
  • r reply, g reply-all, m compose, d delete, y send
  • c then ? opens the folder browser (+INBOX, +Sent, +Drafts)

mail (mailx)

The minimal, everywhere mail reader. Reads the system spool (/var/mail/$USER, or /mail/$USER on sdf).

  • Launch: mail; type a message number to read it; h lists headers
  • r <n> reply, d <n> delete, u <n> undelete
  • q quits and moves read mail to mbox; x exits without changing anything (use x when just checking)
  • Send: mail user@host, or reply inside with r

micro

Terminal editor, the default EDITOR/VISUAL on most tildes.

  • Ctrl+S save, Ctrl+Q quit, Ctrl+Z/Ctrl+Y undo/redo
  • Ctrl+F find, Ctrl+E opens the command bar (> help for docs)

byobu

Wrapper around tmux/screen for persistent sessions: how IRC stays connected between logins. Available on pink, club, and envs among others.

  • Launch: byobu; ssh -t host byobu attaches in one step
  • F2 new window, F3/F4 switch, F6 detach
  • Sessions die on server reboot; re-create them after outages

See tmux & byobu for the full page.
