Wiki Hygiene Rules
Community guidelines for maintaining quality and civility on the folk.zone wiki.
These rules ensure the wiki remains a useful, welcoming resource for everyone.
Content Principles
These principles guide how we structure and write wiki content.
- Atomic pages: one topic per page. Keep pages focused and concise.
- Evergreen titles: name pages as facts, not questions. Use “SSH Key Setup” not “How do I set up SSH keys?”
- Bidirectional links: all child pages must link back to their parent namespace. Run the link checking script to enforce this.
- Source of truth: the wiki supersedes scattered .md files in the repository. If information conflicts, the wiki is correct.
Community Behavior Guidelines
- Assume good faith: believe people want to help the community. When someone makes a mistake, help them fix it.
- Collaboration before conflict: attempt to resolve issues through discussion first. Use talk pages or direct communication.
- Respect authors wishes: do not repost content if authors do not want it hosted here. If someone wants their content removed, honor that request.
- No bigotry: no stereotyping or prejudice against any groups. This includes discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, ability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, religion, or lack thereof.
- Constructive criticism: criticize ideas, not people. Provide specific, helpful feedback and suggestions for improvement.
- Take criticism gracefully: when others constructively criticize your work, respond respectfully and consider their feedback.
Editing Standards
- Be civil: treat the wiki like a public park. No harassment, doxing, or revealing private information about others.
- Improve the discussion: always add something positive to the wiki, however small. Every edit should make the wiki better.
- Be agreeable when disagreeing: avoid name-calling, ad hominem attacks, and responding to tone instead of content.
- Respect the topic: even if you disagree with content, acknowledge that the topic matters to others who contributed it.
- Keep it tidy: put content in the right namespace. Do not cross-post the same content in multiple places.
Technical Guidelines
- No AI scraping: the wiki is not for training AI models. Do not run wiki content through ChatGPT or similar tools.
- No vandalism: destructive edits will be reverted. Vandalism includes deleting useful content, replacing pages with nonsense, or intentional disruption.
- Namespace discipline: follow the established namespace structure. Do not create new top-level namespaces without discussion.
- Link hygiene: run the link checking script regularly to ensure bidirectional links and catch broken links.
Enforcement
- Warning first: minor infractions get a single warning. This includes accidental namespace violations or formatting issues.
- Temporary restrictions: repeated issues may result in temporary editing restrictions or account suspension.
- Permanent bans: persistent violations or severe issues (bigotry, harassment, doxing, repeated vandalism) may result in permanent bans.
- Appeal process: banned users can appeal to administrators by contacting hello@folk.zone.
Attribution
These guidelines are adapted from community wiki best practices including tilde.town, BG3 Modding Community, Snowdrift.coop, and other small community wikis.
