Avatar Storage

Avatar storage is currently disabled in the folk.zone webmention deployment.

Background

The upstream webmention.io codebase includes ca3db configuration for AWS-backed avatar storage. This uses AWS API Gateway, Lambda, and S3 to fetch and cache author profile pictures.

Current status

The ca3db block in config.yml is not configured. Without AWS credentials, the avatar storage feature does not function. Author avatars will not be archived or served.

Future options

To enable avatar storage, you have two options:

1. Local disk storage: Patch the avatar-fetching code to write to a local Docker volume instead of AWS. This would be more folk.zone-native but requires code changes.

2. AWS credentials: Populate the ca3db block with real AWS credentials. This is the fastest path but means the self-hosted webmention server still phones out to AWS for every avatar.

Volume

A Docker volume (folkzone_webmention_avatars) is already defined in docker-compose.yml and mounted to /app/public/pictures in the container. This can be used for local avatar storage if the code is patched.
